It is strange to think that the reason for ‘the’ candle was to light up the evenings and the dark nights, to add light to the remainder of the day,  easing you into the night time to sleep under the moon light before waking up to the sunlight.   Do we flick the switch of a light today with the same thought?  No!  We take it for granted, it’s on, it’s off and sometimes even left on when it is not even required (a huge problem globally in itself. Wes is constantly running around the house, shouting polar bears, and quite rightly so.) Now, I am not at all suggesting we return to those days, I’m massively a fan of electric on demand, in the words of Hamlet ‘Give me some light’ but the connotations of a candle, now that is worth a few words and a thought.

We no longer use candles for practical purposes (unless holidaying off the grid perhaps) but every time you light a candle there is  more of a thought there than you think, you might not be using it to illuminate the room but most definitely to light up your day.  Whether that be revisiting a memory, or  a moment to recreate  or to create. Scents are so strong they can transport you back to a time in a moment. Fig candles for me take me straight back to the weeks leading up to my wedding, vanilla,  to when we first moved into our little flat, and Orange blossom flies me back to one of our favourite holidays in Greece .So all come with an importance,  a time and a place and all with their own story.

Just as the beautiful Lara Quin Quartz + Amber Lily candle which was recently sent to me by the beautiful curator of the company, which all itself began from an act of kindness from a stranger,

“At about 8 months pregnant, and having had some devastating news, I sat crying quietly in a corner of the train station coffee shop.

A woman, with a kind smile, tapped me on the shoulder and gave me a huge cup of hot chocolate and proceeded to embrace me in a giant bear hug. She didn’t ask what was wrong, simply told me that everything would be a little brighter tomorrow. Her name was Lara Quin

It’s amazing how such a simple act of kindness could really lift someone’s spirits and i’ve never forgotten her”

The Soy gem stone candles, are all hand poured in a small studio in England,   with the healing powers of gemstones,  to bring inner peace to you.  Rose Quartz to give off love, Smoky Quartz to help you sleep and Crystal Quartz to clear your mind,  creating a finished candle that smells beautiful with the additional love and kindness.  All come in the most beautiful and thoughtful packaging, you will want to keep the box on your shelf too.

After weeks of not sleeping well,  reasons all first world I’m sure, the gifts arrival was kismet.   The Amber and Lily candle has notes of Bergamot, Amber, Sandalwood and Patchoulibelnded blended with crystal Quartz, which is known as the ‘Master Healer’. This delight now sits in my bedroom,  drawing  off negative energy to balance and revitalise, with Lavender for harmony & clarity.  The act of kindness of Lara Quin is endless, unbroken and beautiful!

We take time to light a candle for those who have passed, but why not take time to light a candle for those who are in your life, however fleeting, for those that make you smile, those that make you laugh and most importantly to those who are kind. Bringing positivity  for a moment an hour or an evening, and as you light it savour that, creating a story for that time.

So not so like once upon a time  I will light my  a candle to fill the evening darkness but to appreciate acts of kindness, to find inner peace and calm and add light and clarity to my everyday,  and of course to make my bedroom smell divine…

…..And in time, when the aroma of a Quartz and Amber stop me in my tracks, this act of kindness will coming flooding back!

I try to capture a moment albeit it grand or seemingly insignificant, so it can last just that little bit longer…

  1. These look so lovely, I’ve just ordered two. One for me as a treat and another as a gift for a friend.
